day 4 prompt: name something beautiful outside of your window.
i live in the woods, not the deep deep woods, but like, there's a lot of trees and wildlife, ok?
my bedroom is in the basement, with a window that looks into my mother's backyard.
fairly frequently, deer come around.
they're beautiful creatures with innocence hung between their eyes.
gentle browns and whites that blend in with the dead trees,
making them easy to miss when you're driving, and all deer become potential threats.
i feel sick when i see a mangled deer body that's been shoved off to the side of the road.
who cleans up the roadkill?
sorry, those were not the visuals i intended on sharing.
i wanted to share with you the time i witnessed a deer give birth.
i was young, maybe 12, maybe 14.
it was the beginning of springtime.
nights and early mornings were still bitterly cold.
my dad called the children to the dining room.
"look."
curled up right outside our window was a swollen dear
she convulsed several times and out came a slimy fawn with gangly legs.
this happened twice more.
i quietly watched in awe.
i was impressed with sheer natural forces, no matter how much i was trying to not let it gross me out.
i wish there was a significant moral of the story to wrap it up nicely, but i had no great realizations. i have very few memories of my childhood, but this one was significant enough to stay with me. that has to count for something!
